On this page, I will be detailing for you a potential solution for one of the biggest problems facing Shanghai today; overpopulation.
as detailed on the page push factors, shanghai has a population density of 3,630.5 people per square kilometre, and a total population of around 24.1 million people. Contrary to this, the outer suburbs only have a population density of around 900 people per square kilometre.
Many of the jobs, hospitals, and other facilities/workplaces are located in the city, meaning that everyone has to travel long distances from the suburban areas or live in/near the city to make a living. This creates an unbalanced environment. I believe that the solution to this is to create more job oppertunities, hostpitals, schools and the like in the outer rural areas, to spread out the population and create a more even and liveable environment, since most of these facilities are located solely in the inner city. Some may argue that this will cause problems to provide neccecities for the rural areas, such as power and clean water. I believe that a solution to this is to use renewable forms of power and water (i.e. Solar panels, desalination plants, etc). This will save the need for large fossil fuel plants, which in turn will help the environment. Many may also complain that adding new jobs, buisnesses and facilities may disrupt the suburban lifestyle. I propose that rather than making a new city, we intergrate these buisnesses, facilities, etc into the suburbian environment by keeping the building sizes low, and by keeping the large buildings sparser than they would be in a traditional city.
